If you’re anything like me, the new year didn’t start off with quite the ‘bang’ that you had hoped for. Perhaps it was more like a squeak. And a shrill (yet manly), “Happy New Year!”, followed by quickly downing your champagne as you thought about all of the improvements you want to make in 2018. Or, maybe your celebration was just amazing and as you opened your eyes on January 1st you stretched, sans hangover, jumped out of bed all bright eyed and bushy tailed and proclaimed, “2018 will be the year of ME!”. If that’s the case, power to you. But if you’re like me, or anywhere in between, you’re feeling the stress of the new year and all that has to be done to make this year the best one yet. No matter how long your list, if you start with this you’re sure to appreciate each day a little bit more: Vow to Stress Less in 2018.
As you take a look at your list of resolutions, don’t let it overwhelm you. In fact, find the joy in them! This year maybe you want to spend more time with friends and family, you want to travel more, you want to be more financially responsible (yes, those things can all happen together). You want to exercise more. Guess what? Those things can all help you stress less, too! Pureman has you covered.
Set Aside Social Time
Putting aside time to go out with friends, visit family and socialize can raise your spirits and take your mind off of the list of things that are causing you stress. Laughing, exchanging stories and reminding yourself that you have support and friendship around you can help put things into perspective. You can come back to your work with fresh eyes and more positivity.
Taking five minutes before bed to write down three things that you are grateful for from that day. They can be big or small - your fish and chips, your date with a mate, anything that works for you. Think about why you’re grateful. Write that down, too. At the end of the week, you can look back and see that your week was full of things to be grateful for. You’re pretty lucky, after all!
Release those endorphins! Go play a game of footy, run, do yoga. Exercise is a great way to release stress and improve both your mind and body.
Be Financially Responsible
This may seem like a chicken and egg problem. Of course, financial issues are one of the greatest causes of stress for adults, there is no doubt. But organizing your finances, saving and preparing for any big financial events (buying a home, medical expenses) can help you relieve at least some of your financial stress in the long run. It takes time and some sacrifice, but it can be done at any age. Don’t expect your financial woes to disappear overnight, but get started right away and slowly, it will get better! Check out The Barefoot Investor if you want the layman’s breakdown on how to get started.
Travel does not need to cost buckets of money. Travel can be renting a caravan and heading to Lake Moogerah for the weekend. Any escape to take you out of your routine and decompress is a great way to find the joy in your life and cool off from the stresses of the day to day.
Alright Puremen (and women), take this mini arsenal and face 2018 with a positive attitude. Make it your best yet!
