Skincare shouldn’t be difficult or daunting. This misconception is what holds many back from reaping the incredible benefits a couple of simple steps each day brings to skin health. Put simply, we need to keep our skin clean, nourished and hydrated. With these three steps in mind we can build a simple skin care ritual which delivers optimal results without hours of input. So where to start?
So where to start? The most important first step is keeping our skin clean and clear. We need to elevate the way we wash our face and body; using water is no longer acceptable. And the reason is pretty simple; water doesn’t do an effective job of clearing away the microscopic buildup of impurities such as bacteria, pollution, dirt, oil, dead skin cells, sunscreens and makeup which can make their way below the surface. This buildup can form a fatty layer which clogs the pores, leading to breakouts of pimples and blackheads, a dull complexion and damage at a cellular level which ultimately leads to premature ageing
There are two important steps when washing the skin to help maintain clear, vibrant skin. The first is to exfoliate away the buildup of skin cells. This is the heavy lifting part of the process, where small abrasive beads penetrate the upper layers of the skin to remove dead cells and excesses from pores, revealing fresh skin cells and reducing pore size. As we age the process of skin cell regeneration slows, so exfoliating helps aid this process
When considering an exfoliator be mindful of your skin type; some exfoliator beads, certainly many of the synthetic versions, can be too harsh on sensitive skin. They can disrupt the outer skin layer leading to irritation, inflammation and redness. Always choose a natural exfoliator, and limit use to twice weekly if you do suffer from sensitive skin
The second step is to prepare the skin to absorb the nutrients and moisture we feed it when applying a moisturiser. Without the cleansing action, those nourishing wonder ingredients sit on the surface and we miss unlocking their full potential. Synthetic cleansers, where chemicals are used to clean the skin, can reduce oil levels to the point they dry out the skin. An natural oil based cleanser can help regulate pH levels and oil production, meaning the skin doesn’t dry out
