(Read Time: 2 Minutes)

You know one of the things I love about Christmastime? The Christmas and holiday markets. They’re the best. You have all of these tents set up filled with delicious food, there’s usually live music, sometimes you get petting zoos for the little ones. And the amazing gifts, handmade goods and quality made-with-love merch is just the best. We’ve got an awesome list of the top Christmas markets in and around Brisbane ready for you, but before we jump in I must admit there is another, maybe lesser known, thing about these markets that I really geek out about. The history of the Christmas market.

So quick fun fact.

These Christmas markets that we know and love today originally grew from the Late Middle Ages in German speaking Europe. The first market as we sort of know them today was held in 1298 when citizens of Vienna were given permission to hold a “Krippenmarkt” (Nativity Market) during Advent, while the first “Christkindlmarkt” (Christmas Market) took place in Germany in 1384 (The Guardian 2018.) These markets began by slogging only meat as the market wares, but over time they grew to supply other everyday items as well as gifts, treats and entertainment. Today, the Christmas Market is a seasonal staple in towns and cities all over the world. And Brisbane is no exception! If you’re living local and want to explore the awesome Christmas markets, whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for that special someone or just want to feel that festive feeling with your family as you stroll from stall to stall in the sunshine, Pureman’s got you covered.
