If you’re a bloke who cares about his hair, who enjoys both the look and feel of your gentleman locks and are constantly on the lookout for a product that can give you all you need, we have you covered. Pureman’s guide to pomades will fill you in on the benefits of this awesome styling product, how to use it and some of the best brands out there.

What is Pomade?

Pomade is a type of creamy hair product that is both waxy and, more often than not, water-based. It works for any hair type, thick, thin, straight or curly and in both long and short hair. It can help make your hair matte or shiny and comes in a range of strengths depending upon your hair needs.

Pomade offers textures that are more flexible and versatile without giving you that crunchy, hard feeling that so often comes with using gel based products. Get a more natural look and feel without losing your favourite style for your board meeting or big night out.

How to Use Pomade:

Depending on how you want your hair to look and feel, pomade can be used on completely dry hair or on damp hair, though we recommend a solid towel dry before you apply. Let’s just put it out there now, don’t use it on wet hair, as it’s a water based product so if it’s too wet and diluted, it loses its effect.

If you use pomade on dry hair, you have given yourself a bit more work to do in order to work it through your strands evenly. If you emulsify a bit in your hands, you can run the product through your dry hair for a bit of textured style. It will have a chunkier, more separated look with more of a matte finish. Roll with it dry if that’s the look you are going for!

If you are more interested in a bit of a sheen and smoother finish, you’re best bet is using the pomade on damp hair. Here’s why. Being a water based product, the (very slightly) damp hair will activate the product and allow it to be more easily distributed through your hair.

Deciding what kind of hold and finish you want will help you decipher if you should go for dry hair on damp hair when you style. Pomade offers a pretty great selection when it comes to light, medium and strong holds as well as a range of sheens from matte to ultra shine. Are you looking for the Mad Men slicked office look? Perhaps a more natural but still ready for business feel is what you’re after. Once you know what you’re aiming for, dig out a pea sized amount (always start small, you can add more but you can’t take it away without having to rewash your whole head of hair!) and rub it into your fingertips to warm it up for application. Apply the pomade and focus first on your roots, moving out from there. Work the product all through your hair and be sure it really gets in the sides as well as the top if you’re looking for a specific finish, whether it be more matte or sheen, to maintain balance. Then, give the hair a brush through to really get the pomade distributed evenly.

Time to style! The pomade is in, now you can work your magic. Slick it, give it a piecey, textured look, make it shine or make it muted and natural. Whatever the look you’re going for, pomade will help you make it happen.
