Men’s Hair Grooming Questions Answered | Pureman Blog

Q: How often should I be shampooing my hair?

A: This answer differs depending on two factors: Your lifestyle, and the type of you hair you have. When it comes to your lifestyle, if you are active and sweating daily, then you may need to wash your hair every day with a mild shampoo (try Brickell Strengthening Shampoo that is suitable for all hair types and gentle enough for everyday use) to remove dirt and oil build-up, followed by a good conditioner. If not, then 3 -4 times a week should suffice.

However, this should also coincide with the type of hair you have. For example, dry and coarse hair can become even drier if over-washed as this can strip the hair of its natural oils. As a general rule of thumb, three washes is a good point of departure, but oilier and greasier hair may require some extra TLC.

Hair washing tip: Never skip the conditioner! This important step in the washing process not only leaves hair feeling smooth and looking shiny, but it helps to replenish the hair’s natural oils and recover from damage. We recommend D.R. Harris Golden Conditioner.

Q: Is it true that I shouldn’t be washing my hair with hot water?

A: We know a hot and steaming shower sounds really appealing, but this very hot water applied to the hair can strip it of its natural essential oils from both your hair and scalp. This will make your hair look and feel dry, plus leave your scalp itchy. It’s best to cool down the water temperature before you wash and rinse hair as wet hair is already weak and susceptible to damage.

Q: My hair is thinning – is there anything I can do about this?

A: Firstly, the good news is that you’re not alone – millions of men complain about thinning hair as early as their mid thirties! There are some shampoos that can assist in slowing this process, such as American Crew Hair Recover & Thickening Shampoo that stimulates and soothes the scalp to promote thicker hair.

There are a few small changes you can implement to assist too:

1. You can change to a lightweight styling product like the  Blind Barber 60 Proof Hair Wax that won’t add extra stress to your hair.

2. And after a shower, pat your hair dry instead of aggressively rubbing it dry, as wet hair is at its weakest.

3. Lastly, try to get nifty with a hairdryer and styling comb (we love the  Mason Pearson 16cm Styling Comb) to cover up any thinning spots with a new style.

Q: My hair is frizzy and untameable after a wash – how can I keep it tame?

A: Frizzy hair is usually caused by excess friction or rubbing, and dryness that can be for a number of different reasons. There are a few things you can do – from styling, to washing – to help eliminate frizzy and wild hairs:
1. When combing, avoid using a comb with tight bristles, as this will only make the hair frizzier. Use a wide bristle end of a comb like the  D.R. Harris Imi Ivory Comb.

2. Condition after using shampoo with a nourishing product such as the  American Crew Daily Conditioner that conditions both the hair and scalp.

3. Style your hair with a lightweight product that will give your hair a moisture boost. We love  Baxter of California Cream Pomade that not only softens the hair, but also leaves it shiny and frizz free.
