We love a little bit of history here at Pureman. It speaks of times gone by, ways of living that were simpler, different views in which men approached grooming and what it meant to have a quality shave...so to honour that old timey era of men’s grooming, we’re shining the spotlight on Proraso, because nothing says quality and time tested men’s shaving products like Proraso!
Proraso is “the oldest and most famous shaving manufacturer in Italy”. Founded in 1908 by Ludovico Martelli, it’s a 4th generation family owned company that has been around for over 100 years. It began as a manufacturing company of perfumes and colognes but it wasn’t until 1948 that the famous Proraso pre and after shave creams as we know them, were created. At the time, there was nothing like it on the market and no other products addressed irritation and razor burn as an issue with men’s shaving. It was quickly embraced by Italian barbers and gentleman who preferred to shave at home. Now, it’s used world wide and is a familiar name to any barber worth his salt. Stafania Martelli, the great granddaughter of Ludovico Martelli himself, states in this great little inside the brand video that the known and respected Proraso quality is based on two things, “acknowledgement from the barbers who are the masters of shaving...and the respect [we] have for traditional methods of production and formulation.” They respect the ingredients and maintain 90% of their products as natural, paraben and silicone free and without mineral oils. That’s some good stuff on your face.
Today, Proraso continues to share amazing men’s barber supplies and shave products. They have 4 product lines marked by different colours that are sold all over the world. Green packaging products are for normal skin and come with a lovely menthol and eucalyptus scent. The blue line is all about the moisture and has the vitamin E and aloe vera to help with that! Red is made with shea butter and works to soften hair and has the wonderful and manly sandalwood scent. White is for sensitive skin with a lime and apple sent. If you’re ever in Italy and craving a good, old fashioned close shave, ask for the yellow Proraso line. Boom.
The underlying principle defined by Ludovico and his son, Piero, was this: “to create professional, quality products that deliver a pleasurable and impeccable shave, in the barbershop and at home.” We totally think they deliver.
Proraso Pre Shave Cream: This is the product that first began Proraso, and possibly the one they’re most famous for. Made with menthol and eucalyptus, this pre shave cream can be used both before and after your shave to soothe and protect your skin, giving it a fresh feeling. It also combats that frustrating shave irritation. Winner!
Sandalwood Shaving Soap in a Bowl: If you’re more of a soap with a bowl and a brush kind of guy, this is right up your alley. With different scents on offer, the Proraso shave soap in Sandalwood contains shea butter so it’s great for dry skin. Just work it into that smooth, creamy lather. You can also buy a hog’s hair Proraso shave brush that’s affordable and easy to use. Perfection.
Aloe and Vitamin E After Shave Balm: This awesome balm comes in a few formulas, but this bad boy is alcohol free and works hard to soothe and protect your skin. It’s light, fresh and leaves you feeling moisturized and free of irritation. This also comes in eucalyptus and menthol, green tea and oatmeal, cypress and vetyver, sandalwood and shea and azure lime. So many options to choose from! Just take a look at our site for the different benefits of each!
Wood and Spice Beard Oil: Scented with cedarwood and Mediterranean citrus, this beard oil does it right. It nourishes, smoothes, protects and tames that manly beard. All you need to do is rub a few drops through your dampened beard two or three times a week, and you’ll feel that extra softness.
Razor Cut Styptic Gel: We all like to think we can give ourselves the perfect shave every time, but this product is for those days when you just, well, miss the mark. This gel helps to heal and stop the bleeding caused by those nasty shave knicks and cuts we all give ourselves from time to time.
If you haven’t checked out Proraso yet, what the heck are you waiting for?
